Energy is our biggest cost factor.
Large amounts of energy are needed for the repeated heating and cooling
down of the material.
Electric melting furnaces are used in the foundry to melt the raw materials. The latest method is used. This produces 20-25% less slag (=waste) compared to natural gas heating. Gas-fired furnaces are used in the rolling mill to heat the metals. The energy consumption of the plants and machinery (e.g. melting furnace, walking beam furnace) has been optimised. Some older plants have been equipped with computer controls. Standstill times were reduced. An energy management system which will be introduced as of 2001 should provide a safe and detailed data basis and reveal further optimisation potentials.
