Hot rolling produces an
oxide layer (scales) on the surface which has to be removed by milling the
material.
Schwermetall has two cutters. The upper and lower side of the strip are milled simultaneously. The max. milling speed is 30 m/min. The amount of material removed on each side is approx. 0.6 mm. The chips which are produced are blown by large fans through underground channels directly into the foundry, which is around 600 m away, and remelted. The strip is wound into a coil after milling.
